Anechoic Chamber

A design-build studio of 26 UT design students working together to design and construct a sensory deprivation chamber.

Location: Knoxville, TN

Date: Spring 2024

Professor: Brian Ambroziak & David Matthews

Peers: 3rd & 4th Year BARCH Students

Structure + Function

The chamber is built with plywood and multiple layers of insulation, inclusing mass-loaded vinyl, bass insulation, and acoustic panels.

The chamber is designed to deprive one’s senses and shift their perception of sensory limitations. Each student spend one hour inside to experience its sensory effects and reflect on their personal experience.
